Two years ago I tweeted this:

In the past two years non-traditional marriage has gained so much momentum that gay marriage looks likely to be legalized over the entire country sometime in the not so distant future. I say that non-traditional marriage has gained momentum (not just gay marriage) because the arguments being used in favor of gay marriage could really be used to argue for any type of marriage (polygamist, adult-child, you name it).

The common statements like, “you should be able to marry whoever you love,” and “as long as you (meaning those not in the relationship) are not harmed by it, who are we to dictate who can and cannot get married?” can be used to argue for any type of “marriage.”

But this post is not about arguing for marriage between a man and a woman. It is about how very soon, perhaps only in four years and not forty, those who stand for traditional marriage will be shamed for it. We see this happen already in the media, but we seem to still be in a phase in our culture where we are “evolving” on this issue.

Which means that sometime soon (perhaps when all 50 states have legalized gay marriage), the time for “evolving” will have ended, and those that have not changed or “progressed” with the times will be looked down upon. Even the Presbyterian Church (USA), the largest Presbyterian denomination in the United States, voted last month to approve two measures allowing ministers to perform same-sex marriage.

So where does this leave biblically based Christians who want to honor God’s design for marriage and sex in our sexualized culture where sex is one of our culture’s highest gods?

We are to live for God’s approval, not man’s. 

For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

We are to love those with whom we disagree with. So being mocked, shamed, or what have you for holding to biblical sexual ethics is to be taken with the humility of knowing that we need the love and forgiveness of Christ just as much as anyone else.

As human beings, we want everyone to like us. But following Jesus often puts us at odds with the world says we should or can live. So if in the very near future supporting God’s design for sex and marriage is viewed as outdated and shameful by the vast majority of people, let us remember to love those that disagree with us, and to remember that Jesus is our God, not our culture.
