Updating my iPhone!

I have an iPhone 4s. No, I will not be getting the iPhone 5 because I am perfectly content with what I have and am not someone who has to get every new thing.

Ok, maybe it’s just because it’s not time to renew my contract so I can’t afford it…

At least they updated their operating software yesterday so that my phone will be able to do many of the things the iPhone 5 can. And since the iPhone is getting a lot of attention these days, I thought I would share what it has taught me about Jesus:

Nothing.

Don’t get me wrong, I really like my phone. The technology that it provides has an abundance of positives to it, but it can be severely negative at times.

It has made it harder to have quality conversations. Text messages, Twitter, the internet; we miss so many real life moments because we are distracted. It has allowed me to waste even more time on social media (not that social media in itself is wasteful, just the amount of time we can spend on it). It has caused me to not fully enjoy certain moments because I’m too worried about taking a good picture.

But it hasn’t brought me any closer to Jesus.

There certainly is nothing wrong about being excited for new things and it is just fine to enjoy them, but we can’t lose focus on what is most important.

But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.

Nothing compares to the surpassing greatness of Jesus Christ. We all have experienced that nothing we have brings joy. It may bring us happiness for a few days or weeks or months, but then our new “thing” just becomes apart of every day life.

Joy is found in Jesus, not in my iPhone. Nothing is worth more than knowing Jesus, and nothing brings more joy.
